Despite the hostile environment, the hydrothermal vent and methane seep ecosystems support dense populations of macrobenthos which, with the help of chemoautotrophic endosymbionts, are fuelled by simple reduced molecules such as methane and hydrogen sulfide. Studying vent and seep organisms may answer fundamental questions about their origin and evolution, population connectivity, as well as the adaptation to the extreme environments. We mainly employ a molecular-based -omics approach, combined with physical oceanography modelling, physico-chemical analysis, as well as field surveys.
